Detection of people going onto rail tracks

SafeZone can be used to detect people going or walking into tracks, provided the limitations/requirements below.
However, SafeZone has never been deployed as an Alert solution to prevent people getting crushed by trains.

Requirements for a person to be detected on tracks are:

- The person should not be obscured by any moving human/object, from behind him or in front of him, in the camera field of view. For instance, the detection of a person is not guarantee when the person goes into tracks while the train is approaching behind him (i.e. there is a 2D overlap in the image between the person and the train).

- The person should not be obscured by any still human/object placed in front of him in the camera field of view. For instance, the detection of a person is not guarantee when the person goes into tracks or walks on tracks while a still standing person on the platform is obscuring him in the camera field of view. This obscuring issue can be limited if the cameras are placed close to the tracks (or better above the tracks) and pointing in the direction of the tracks such as the focal axis of the cameras are nearly parallel to the tracks.

- The person should be visible from feet to head for SafeZone to start detecting and tracking him. As the previous point, cameras placed close to the track can help to meet this requirement.


False alarms may occur in the following situations:

- The train moves very slow or the strain is stopping/starting up in the detection zone.

- The train is made of very large transparent windows such as bodies of people inside the train are almost fully seen in the camera field of view. This may happen only when the camera is placed at the side of the tracks. This issue can be limited or eliminated when cameras are placed close to the tracks (or better above the tracks) and pointing in the direction of the tracks such as the focal axis of the cameras are nearly parallel to the tracks.


In order to get better performances, we recommend to use thermal cameras.

Finally, for any use case involving trains, we recommend to put in place a first testing phase to make sure of the feasibility regarding client expectations and target environment and system setup.
